SunArt Paper (Made in USA) - Easy Photography

We think this product is a great introduction to photography for kids, and potentially a great Science Fair project-starter.

Cyanotype, also referred to as "blueprinting", is the oldest non-silver photographic printing process.  It involves exposing materials which have been treated with special chemicals (namely, a solution of potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate, both of which are very safe) to a UV light source such as the sun. The exposed portions of the paper will undergo chemical change, whereas the portions covered by your object (eg., a leaf) will be unaltered.  Water stops the chemical process and fixes your images on paper. Once the paper dries, parts that were exposed to the sun will turn a shade of Prussian blue (ferric ferrocyanide), while parts that were covered by your object will be white.

To create a science fair project using the Sun Sensitive Paper, all you need to do is identify and use a variable. A variable is an aspect or factor of the experiment that you can control and alter. Here are some examples of variables that you could use:

  • Test different sunscreen brands or SPFs by spreading the sunscreen on the paper.
  • Try to find the best pair of UV-blocking sunglasses.

Once you identify your variable (don't let us hold you back, if you have better ideas, use those!), start conducting your experiments. Make sure that you keep all other factors the same, though. Otherwise, you'll have multiple variables!

Recommended for children ages 6 and up.
